About us

Phil Settels, daom, L.Ac.

After suffering from rugby and other sports injuries, and chronic digestive issues, Phil experienced acupuncture and herbal medicine and his health finally began to turn around. This motivated him to leave his previous field of engineering and pursue a career in Chinese Medicine.

Phil moved to Oakland, California and earned his Master’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences (ACCHS) in 2011. This is also where he met his wife, Shoanie.

Inspired to dive deeper into Chinese Medicine, Phil visited teachers throughout the US and China, and in 2020 completed a Doctorate of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

Phil specializes in treating pain and orthopedic conditions, as well as complex and chronic disease, such as autoimmune disorders, digestive issues, neurological conditions, endocrine disorders, etc. He loves herbal medicine and coming up with individualized formulas.

He teaches at the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences in Oakland, and runs the doctorate program as Dean of Academics.

Shoanie young, L.AC.

In her previous life, Shoanie was a concert violinist. Fast-paced life led her to seek a sustainable and balanced approach to health.

Shoanie holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music (Bachelor of Music), and University of Southern California (Master of Music). On the path to becoming a nurse practitioner at Johns Hopkins University, she decided instead to pursue Chinese Medicine. With the support and encouragement of her family, Shoanie graduated from Chinese Culture and Health Sciences with a Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and is a California licensed acupuncturist and herbalist (L.Ac.).

Shoanie specializes in pain management, autoimmune disorders, stress and anxiety, and headaches. She also enjoys treating kids. Shoanie is currently pursuing Sports Medicine Apprenticeship Program taught by Whitfield Reaves.

Shoanie loves acupuncture. There is wonder and delight in seeing positive effects on people, and she is committed to helping individuals improving their well-being and quality of life.

“In addition to his effective acupuncture and herbal treatments and nutritional suggestions, I have found one of Phil’s strengths to be his ability to be present with me as a patient and to listen to my concerns without judgment. For me, that has been nearly as healing as the treatment itself.”
